Historically home to manufacturing powerhouses, Birmingham maintains its industrial reputation today, with Jaguar Land Rover and Cadbury still maintaining significant operations in the area. However, its economy has diversified in recent years and it now hosts companies such as Sainsbury's, Lloyds Banking Group and Whitbread, as well as six universities, making it one of the largest concentrations of higher education in Europe. Its diverse service sector economy and place as an important research, transport and conference hub is backed by a fast light rail connection to central London, in addition to access to the M5, M6, M40 and M42 motorways. With a population of 1.1 million people, Birmingham is a large and important city for the Midlands.
